He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara, my brother Paul A whom he was named after and myself. Also 2 grandchildren Amy and Kevin, 2 brothers and many neices. I rode her breaking the way for tankers of aviation fuel going to Newfoundland and Greenland airforce base.Got familiar with polar bears and eskimous.The old "Pregent Lady" ( neckname )was not only an icebreaker but also known as "The LOVE Boat" of Boston Mass. |

2/22/2008 8:25:41 PM My father,Edward L.Turney FN55 was on the U.S.S.Edisto in 1955.I noticed after receiving a phone call, that my father was listed as AWOL on the Edisto web site.He has "Gone to sea" Nov.1989.He spoke of the Edisto when I was very young (I'm now 52)and when he passed,I kept the poster-size picture of the polar bear with the plaque that reads "Royal order of the blue nose" August 17th,1955.It currently hangs in my 15 year olds bedroom. I hope this clears up any speculation. Also,Joseph Pyntyr,HM2,also on the Edisto at the same time,has "Gone to sea"as well. |

2/9/2008 10:39:06 PM Dear Mr. Herrmann, Attached are three digital photographs that my father took while he was on the USS Glacier in June to July 1959. The classic Cold War Eisenhower years. The ship in the photographs is the USS Edisto, as I identified from the bow markings. These photographs were taken on a cruise, in convoy, up to the DEW Line base at Thule, Greenland. As you can see in the photographs, the weather had deteriorated and the convoy was stopped, though trying to keep the lane open for the merchant ships. In one of the photographs you can see the other convoy ship in the background. The other photos show the conditions of low visibility. Enjoy the pictures. My father would be greatly excited if he saw these pictures on your website, even though he wasn't on your ship. We just finished digitizing 76 slides he had from his Arctic cruise on the USS Glacier in convoy with the Edisto. I thought these that pictures would enhance your website’s collection of historical photographs of the Edisto. Feel free to contact me in any regard. After 22 years on NASA Contracts....I went back to the DEPT of the NAVY as the Tech Rep on the MK-lll Data Link on Fri- gates, Crusers and Destroyers. Presently retired....and vert tired!!! |

1/19/2008 9:59:56 PM Glenn, thanx again for the phone call last week...Hope to be able to make the reunion this May, sorry to have missed the last one. I have had e-mails from Rich Howe, funny how it goes, have lived here in Topeka for 28 years and just lately found out Rich also lives here. I was the photographer aboard in 64 when we went to Anvers Island to build the weather station, PH1 Tawney was my b-o-s-s and I have many great memories of the cruise. I still have a lot of the pictures and occasionally check them out. After leaving the ship, one of the last before turning it over to the coast guard, and by the way, I never received any of the booze that was found in the hold, I went to Lemoore Naval Air Station, had a great duty, got to do a lot of flying with the Blue Angels, taking air photos for PR. I also finally got to put the third stripe on, I retired in 1972, moved to Portsmouth, NH for a coupla years then back to Topeka Kansas. Hope to see you guys in May 2008. |

8/20/2007 9:46:10 AM Retired and leading the good life. Bought a new laptop (notebook) computer and siiting in my yard enjoying a cool one and searching the internet. Moved recently and found the sketch of the EDISTO and in brought backsome great memories. Great crew |

8/8/2007 3:23:40 PM I was aboard the uss edisto from dec 1963 until she was de comossiioned and turned over the the goast guard in november 1964. I served under 2 captains. N E Nickerson Commander United States Navy,and Captain J. L Walsh who was in command at the transition from Navy To Coast Guard in 1965. |

7/31/2007 10:25:23 PM Memorial to Frank J. Cluba AMM1 August 1, 1947 Sixty years ago today he became the first crewman to be fatally injured aboard the Edisto when he backed into the tail rotor of the helicopter. I can't recall ever talking with him but I admired him. I was a mess cook at the time and I noticed him in the mess hall with his clique that always sat by the scullery. I guess him to be 25 when he died. I wonder if he left a widow and children. Rest in peace Frank Posted by Virgil Paulk |
