2/21/2010 4:32:02 AM Greetings from Kansas and thanks for putting this sight together. My uncle Herbert F. Orrison came on board in 1953. He was along for Operation Deep Freeze in 1956. Ever since childhood he was my favorite uncle. He always promised me some of his Navy Papers when I got older. The last time I was promised the papers was on a visit to his home in Tucson, Az. in 1990. Sadly he passed in the late 90's. About a year later my father (Herb's brother) went to visit one of their sister's. He brought home Uncle Herb's Navy Papers for me. In this batch of papers I got his Operation Deep Freeze paper and the "deed" to a 100 ft. by 100 ft. plot of land in Edisto Acres!! I still have and cherish both items. Thanks again for putting this sight together and allowing me to talk about my uncle Herb. I loved and miss him very much. John Orrison |

7/16/2009 6:54:17 PM Captain Griffith Evans was my commanding officer on USS Everett (PF-8) Hong Kong Station ship and during Korean War cruise 1952-53. The following is a quote from my book, By Dead Reckoning: I salute Captain Evans, his officers and the top petty officers who trained the crew. They kept us focused on our mission and brought us all safely to port after each deployment in dangerous waters. We crew members reported to our GQ and watch stations when called; we did our duty in mine-infested waters on a defective vessel that the Navy, back in 1944, should never have accepted in the first place. I am honored to have been a part of that crew. I am privileged to have had a role in the defense of the Four Freedoms in a part of the world that never knew the blessing of liberty and democracy until Americans fought and died to win it for the people there. |

4/15/2009 6:37:18 PM "As a former ships cook (alias Stewburner..Bellyrobber etc. I'm sure you all remember the seven(7)course meals we prepared while underway...OK..OK maybe thats a little stretch) but we had a great hard working ships crew. I learned today we have had a phenomenal increase of past crew members joining our USS Edisto Assocciation the last few months since Glenn Smith started publishing the KEE BIRD, a newsletter two or three times a year. Always a pleasure to read. Also having our fourth reunion in Baton Rouge, La. in May 2009. Also heard a lot of great comments on the website appearance and structure that is managed by our WebMaster John Herrmann " |

1/21/2009 7:14:35 PM I was a helicopter pilot from HU 4 and went on the Deep Freeze Operation, 12-'64 to 3-'65 to build Palmer Station. It was a great adventure to say the least. We had a Sikorsky H 19E and a Bell H 13M to fly. On the way back we pilots got qualified as Officer of the Deck of a Deep Draft Ship. Quite an achievement for a junior aviator. It was a well run, easy going fun ship to be on. Cdr. Nickerson (sp) was the captain and since we operated independently he was also task force commander. This latter title gave him a lot of to meet other ships of other navys and explore the area in addition to building Palmer Station on Anvers Island. |

1/8/2009 12:17:02 PM I boarded the Edisto in Boston before she sailed for Palmer Station (to build the station) on 10 December 1964. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers that cruise. I was a remember of the four man Navy crew that wintered over that year. Does anyone who was on board remember the "chair making" contest onboard. Our furniture never arrived on station. |

1/19/2008 9:59:56 PM Glenn, thanx again for the phone call last week...Hope to be able to make the reunion this May, sorry to have missed the last one. I have had e-mails from Rich Howe, funny how it goes, have lived here in Topeka for 28 years and just lately found out Rich also lives here. I was the photographer aboard in 64 when we went to Anvers Island to build the weather station, PH1 Tawney was my b-o-s-s and I have many great memories of the cruise. I still have a lot of the pictures and occasionally check them out. After leaving the ship, one of the last before turning it over to the coast guard, and by the way, I never received any of the booze that was found in the hold, I went to Lemoore Naval Air Station, had a great duty, got to do a lot of flying with the Blue Angels, taking air photos for PR. I also finally got to put the third stripe on, I retired in 1972, moved to Portsmouth, NH for a coupla years then back to Topeka Kansas. Hope to see you guys in May 2008. |

12/13/2007 10:51:04 PM My grandfather, John R. Althouse (SN,51) died on October 30, 2007. He fondly remembered his time in the Navy, and I loved to hear his stories of the Arctic. He had hoped to attend a reunion- but we know he will be there in spirit. I miss him greatly- I find that learning more about the things that he had loved keeps him close to my heart. |

I remember seeing her in Baltimore Harbor in 1974 after we got out of the yards in Curtis Bay MD for a refit prior to going to Europe in 1974. Three of the pix shows the helo's on the fantail. Give me a good email address and I'll be glad to send the jpg images to u. TW |

7/31/2007 10:25:23 PM Memorial to Frank J. Cluba AMM1 August 1, 1947 Sixty years ago today he became the first crewman to be fatally injured aboard the Edisto when he backed into the tail rotor of the helicopter. I can't recall ever talking with him but I admired him. I was a mess cook at the time and I noticed him in the mess hall with his clique that always sat by the scullery. I guess him to be 25 when he died. I wonder if he left a widow and children. Rest in peace Frank Posted by Virgil Paulk |

6/26/2007 12:13:02 PM I reported aboard the Edisto in June 1964 at Boston, MA right after graduation from Tufts University as a brand new, extremly green Ensign when Norval Nickerson was Captain. I departed one year later for Nuclear Power and Submarine School. I resigned from the Navy in December of 1969 as a Lieutenant, qualified in submarines and the Weapons Officer of the USS Seawolf SSN 575. From my Edisto experience, I realized the nuclear Navy did not have to be as uptight as it was to get a job done properly. I will be ever thankful for the real life seagoing learning opportunities that I received from the experienced petty officers, chiefs, warrants and officers on board Edisto. My wife and I have been to the Antarctic and the Arctic fairly recently on Danish and Norwegian ships, respectively, both ice hardened and capable of some ice operation. I think she finally began to understand why I was so upbeat about the three polar trips that I experienced on Edisto. The Arliss II rescue was my last operation in the real Navy before leaving for the nuclear Navy. And therein lies a very complicated story. |

5/9/2007 5:28:38 AM I am saddened to report that my father, Donald F. Schomaker, stationed as a helicopter crewman on board the USS Edisto in (I believe) 1952, passed away last week in Jacksonville, Florida. He was a lifelong supporter of the US Navy (he got me to sign up!), and liked to reminisce about his time on the Edisto, and the USS Midway, on which he also served. He will be missed, and I would appreciate any word from any old-timers here who may have met him on board. |

4/27/2007 11:38:48 AM I was one of two Aerial Photographers(AF2) assigned to temporary duty on the Edisto AG89. We sailed from Boston and visited Newfoundland, Greenland and Iceland during the winter of '88-89. On the cruise, we lost the helicopter in Argentia. I was supposed to be on that flight but was bumped by VIP's. The guys in the rear seat were rescued but the pilot was trapped by the instrument panel and lost when the copter sank through the thin ice where we broke our way into the harbor the night before.I have a couple hundred pictures taken on that trip(the photographer, remember)many from the chopper and all in B&W.The trip was very rough and bitter cold but I wouldn't take a million dollars for the experience. Some of my best sea stories were from the Edisto...Bill Freeland 4/28/2007 |

4/25/2007 1:59:08 PM I obtained my father's (Joe Poirier) DD-214 from my step-mother and noticed he was stationed onboard the Edisto. He spoke often about his time in the Navy, the places he had been and friends he had made. He passed away in 94 of cancer. I'm also in the Navy, stationed at VAW-126 in Norfolk, VA. Nice site, glad I was able to get a glimpse of what he did before I came into the world! AMCS (AW/SW) Cheryl Poirier |

4/8/2007 7:15:16 PM I rode her for a few months in 1950 shooting aerial photography. I was in transit from Greenland to Pensacola for Photo School. Shot a lot of photos that were left on the ship. I do have some color slides that I retained upon getting off the ship at Goose Bay. Enjoyed the time onboard |

3/20/2007 12:27:39 AM SIXTY YEARS AGO TODAY March 20, 1947 The USS Edisto AG-89 Was commissioned into the US Navy San Pedro, California I reported aboard five days later to find a brand new ship. The bunks with new mattresses were waiting to be claimed by arriving crewmen also new lockers awaited them. The decks were varnished and beautiful like found in expensive homes today. They didn't last long. Bos'n Burger set the deck force to holy stoning them till they were bleached raw boards. I don't remember who assigned me to mess cooking in the CPO Dinning Room but the first man I remember meeting was Nathan Butchard. He and I served the Chiefs their meals, brewed their coffee and washed their dishes. I recently made contact with Nathan. The few shake down cruises outside the break waters in San Pedro gave me a preview of the rolling nature of the Grand Old Lady, the Edisto. I came aboard at nineteen and left at twenty. Just a dumb kid along for the ride. I didn't learn what we were doing and where we were till recently. I wouldn't take anything for my experiences aboard the Edisto and would love to relive them. Happy Birthday Old Girl Where Ever You Are And greetings to all you Plank Owners And all others who sailed on her. Virg |

3/1/2007 1:28:55 PM I reported in the spring of '65. I was an Ens at that time and served as cic officer and managed ship's office for awhile before the ship was turned over to the coast guard. I remember LCDR Higgins as exec officer, LT "Molly" Picher as ops boss. There were 2 co's. I don't remember the first , but the second was CDR Wash . I made one trip across the the arctic circle. When Edisto was decommissioned I reported to the USS Hyades which happened to be in Boston for repairs. I have a number of slides of the trip North. I did not know of the existance of this organization. I'm still working as a mathematics teacher at a high school in Maryland. |

7/2/2006 10:14:16 PM My dear friends I have been off the puter for a year . The big storm Ivan put a very hugh oak tree across my house and completely destroyed my bed room. after fighting with the insurance and getting the house repaired I was without power for nine months and I have just had my puter repaired. I went on to retire and now live alone. I buried my wife on valatine day 1993 She passed away from brain cancer. We were married 32 years. Friends have inquired if I will remarry and I tell them I was happily married 32 years and I will never allow myself to be that happy again So long for now I hope to hear from you soon and possibily see some of you. That would be so good. If you wonder who I am I was the one with the cigar permately fixed to my mouth |

6/16/2006 3:21:04 AM HI, my name is Sara. My father Jerry was there on the first reunion and had the time of his life! He was so proud to be a part of that. I just wanted everyone to know how much I appreciate all that you do for the men at these reuinions and how great it makes them feel. And I would especially like to thank Glen, for all the wonderful information he sent to me on my dad and his time aboard. I have included my mother Kathy's email incase anyone wants to get in touch. Dad lost his 15 year battle with cancer in May, it was his time to finally rest. Thank you again for everything that made my dad smile at some of his hardest times:) Sara Allison |

6/12/2006 6:48:18 PM Some things to pass on from my mother about Willie Mault. He told her that what I had done for him was the greatest thing that anyone could have done for him in his entire life. Getting back together with old shipmates and feeling a sense of comraderie again. It just seems that the people that live right next door to you will never be as good a friend as someone you have served with in the U.S. Military. Amen. I am very glad that he had a chance to talk to some of ya'll again and hopefully it brought back some fond memories of getting "out on the ice" with the penguins. He always talked about that when I was a youngin, but I thought maybe he got loose in the penguin cage in the local zoo and bumped his head. I never thought that he was actually telling the truth. Hmmmmm. Sea stories, aren't they great? God Bless and Thank you for your service. |

6/12/2006 5:19:45 PM I feel very lucky to have served aboard the Cutter Edisto because of the many Arctic and Antarctic adventures I participated in and to sail with a great crew! During my service aboard Edisto as an SNQM and QM3 the ship deployed to Operation Arctic East 1967, Operation Arctic East 1968, and Operation Deep Freeze 1969. Each cruise had important missions to complete. In 1967 we assisted in repairing the underwater cable between Thule and Labrador, and participated with the Cutter Eastwind in an unsuccessful, but interesting circumnavigation attempt of the Arctic Basin. In 1968 we participated in radiological survey operations after the crash of a B-52 into Wolstenholme Fjord. The Antarctic deployment was the longest and most interesting cruise we made. However, we had to battle alot of bad weather and overcome serious power plant breakdowns, in order to return to Boston on schedule. I know that my service aboard Edisto inspired me to continue my Coast Guard service in the active USCG Reserve for another 23 years after being discharged from active duty in 1970. |

6/6/2006 6:29:18 PM Greatest Ship and Greatest Crew the navy ever launched,I was an EM2 and also Movie Operator, but I was best known for the 190 proop pure ethyl alci that only I had ascees to, it was supposed to be used only to clean electric generators, I always used Carbon Teck, When a fellow engineering department wanted a little juice, they over the PA system would call for duty electrician to report there, They always had the hot water ready a double shot of 190 in a coffee cup of hot water was called a hot-toddy, it was great, even the Captain,Commander Mayer's personal cook used to call, I knew the skipper was looking for a moral booster. I really had a racket, I was the only crew member that had open gangway, because I ran the movies every night in port.had to be there from 7 to 9 PM, you crew members there with me were the best of the best, I have quite a few pictures of you as a group, Vernon Davis and I helped put together the quansee huts for the weather station at the Air Port on Cornwallis Island- Truman wanted to use to intercept the Russians He believed would attack us by air over the North Pole. The ones of you there with me might remember me as the maker of coffee for all, in a big Army kettle over packing crates, and water from melted snow, Its as plain to me today as if it were yesterday, To my old buddies ,may God bless each and every one of you. To all crew members abord after I left, I know you all are better men today for having been on the Edisto.Hugh Sanders from Mississippi, was with me, he married a girl from Lynn ,Ma. and worked there until he retired, lost contact with all others, Harold J. Hogge, Jr. |

6/3/2006 7:15:39 PM SERVED ABOARD THE "STEADY EDDIE" FOR TWO ARTIC CRUISES AND ONE ANTARCTIC CRUISES. WAS ASSIGNED TO THE DECK DIVISION FOR A FEW MONTHS AND THEN WENT TO THE SUPPLY DIVISION AS A DISPURSING CLERK. WORKED WITH BOB RANDALL AND CHIEF JACKSON. SERVING ABOARD THE EDISTO WAS QUITE AN ADVENTURE. BEING A GREEN HORN RIGHT OUT OF BOOT CAMP I DIDN,T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER, I WOULDN'T HAVE TRADED IT FOR ANOTHER SHIP. GREAT SHIPMATES AND OFFICERS. I REMEMBER THE INITIATIONS VERY WELL AND HAD A LOT OF FUN DOING THEM. DISAPPOINTED WE DIDN'T GET TO SOUTH AMERICA DUE TO RUDDER PROBLEMS. MADE UP FOR IT WHEN WE HAD 10 DAYS IN OSLO NORWAY ON THE NEXT NORTHERN TRIP. THE WEB SITE IS REALLY SPECIAL AND I CHECK IT OFTEN. THE PEOPLE WHO PUT IT TOGETHER DESERVES A BIG "E". HOPE TO MAKE THE NEXT REUNION, EVEN THOUGH 40 PLUS YEARS CHANGES A PERSON. WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM MY OTHER SHIPMATES. |

6/2/2006 8:42:06 PM Just visiting this site. Served as an on the Staten Island '61 to '64 and was searching for info for that ship when I found this. Surprised at how many contacts have been established for people who have served on the Edisto. Wish there was a similar site for the S.I. I know the Edisto was with us on one of the cruises but I don't know which one. I have the DF cruise book somewhere and I'll have to look it up. My thanks to those who have worked on this site. |

5/26/2006 2:50:16 PM I arrived on board the Edisto September 14, 1948 and spent the next 3 years, 7 months and 12 days, until I was discharged from the Navy on May 26, 1952. I returned to Dayton, Ohio and worked at General Motors, staying until February 1986. I had returned to Boston in October 1952 and married Mary. We look forward to celebrating our 54th anniversary this October, 2006. Unfortunately we missed the 2004 Reunion of the Edisto but were determined to attend the 2006 Reunion at Chattanooga, Tn. We had a great time. Enjoyed every minute of it. Met up with my friend from the past Bruce Andrews, who was there with his wife Eleanor. Also met four others who served on board during my time and enjoyed our time together at the reunion. Bob Heintz, Roger Soucey, Harry Anderson, and Jim MacGlafin. It was a great trip down memory lane. Looking forward to the next reunion. |

5/13/2006 5:35:52 AM A great reunion at the Choo Choo! Rekindling old friendships and making new ones is what it is all about. We had a total of 139 shipmates/spouses/guest in attendance at the 4-day event. The first official act of our new president Virgil Paulk was to appoint me as the Reunion Chair for 2008. I can't say that I'm working on it but soon I will "get aroun tuit." |

5/12/2006 2:57:48 PM En-3, assigned to B-2 engine room. Reported on board in Feb. '71 after compleating Diesal Mech. school . Rode with her on the Artic Freeze '72 and the fateful ramming of the Navy vessal on the Artic ice pack . Endured the tow back and was chosen to be on the SouthWind to bring her to Milwaukee as a replacement. The Eddie was a good ship and being on the Southwind reinforced that feeling. I wish things would have worked out a little better for her as she well deserved it. |

4/28/2006 4:47:45 PM Just returned from the 2006 Reunion at Chattanooga. What a fine group of individuals! We had a great time. Looking forward to the next one in 2008. To Glenn, Gene, Virgil and Tiny, your presentation as the officers of the Association was exemplary. Well Done! The new officers have a high mark already set for them. No doubt the "men of the Edisto" are up to it. Thank you for all the time and energy spent on the development of the Association so far. Sincerely, Gene and Mary Fannin (48 - 52) |

4/11/2006 7:53:37 PM Hi Shipmates. Eugene Fellinger [crewmember 1960-61] whom I contacted re my recently published history of VX-6 Squadron US Navy's Operation Deep Freeze 1955-99 and he suggest I sign in on your web site to idenfify myself and 'plug my book' which is called 'COURAGE SACRIFICE DEVOTION' the squadron's motto. The book is published by INFINITY up in PA and at this early stage is on sale on their website www.buybooksontheweb.com. Noel Gillespie Christchurch New Zealand Biography: The author is a part time free lance aviation writer in Christchurch, New Zealand and architectural design consultant and has been covering the US Navy’s Antarctic operations since the late 1950’s.His love for aviation and the Antarctic brought about the writing of this book about a select band of aviators on the frozen continent. His zest for life and his second marriage after 44 years to his late wife Shirley, to which he has three sons, at the age of 70 he enjoys life to the full and dabbled in water colour painting and various writing projects. Selected works by this author: Courage, Sacrifice, Devotion Courage, Sacrifice, Devotion by: Noel Gillespie ISBN: 0-7414-2912-8 ©2006 Price: $35.95 Book Size: 8.5 x 11, 519 pages Category/Subject: Biography/Military A truly remarkable story of endurance, bravery, so immersed in the demands placed on them by the US Navy- the Puckered Penguins’, a group of men and women flighting the odds in the name of Antarctic exploration, carrying out their duties on the frozen continent with danger was lurking everywhere. This epic story is an insight and challenging chronicle of their young life’s flying aircraft on the world’s harshest continent- yet their compassion for their mates will leaves readers stunned. Courage, Sacrifice, Devotion by Noel Gillespie As a part time freelance aviation writer based in Christchurch New Zealand, I am privileged to be able to cover the United States Navy Deep Freeze air operations in Antarctica. In early 1999 I wrote an extensive historical history of VX-6 Squadron covering 1955-99, for a British historic aviation journal ‘AIR Enthusiast’. At this point, the idea to write a book of the renowned Squadron’s illustrious history in Antarctica was conceived and encouraged by my late wife Shirley, along with many old OAE’s. A book had to be written of their exploits in Antarctica, and their story had to be told as a chronicle of their achievements on the frozen continent, their sadness, their joys, their lifetime friendships, and the links they cemented with Christchurch. Like early aviators who had only their wits and reflexes to bring their aircraft down safely, their planes were mere collages of wood, cloth and wire, difficult to control and so sensitive to air currents that even a moderate zephyr could knock them to the ground, while their engines were weak and unreliable, not dissimilar to those early VX-6 aviators, risking their lives, but unlike their early aviation pioneers, the Navy were not risking pride, fame and fortunes, their role was risking their lives to open up the frontier of science and Antarctic exploration. While other books and publications have been written on Operation Deep Freeze, the part that the famous Air Development Squadron Six played in those 44 years, and the US Navy’s role in Antarctica, I believe this is the first book written about the very men and women whos exploits could best be described as the last pioneers of aviation exploration. They were the Boy’s Own flying ace heroes, the Biggles of the 20th century, or the Baron von Richthofen’s, or the American’s Eddie Richenbacker of World War I ‘Flying Circus’. These young intrepid aviators of VX-6 were continuing the ‘Heritage of Kitty Hawk’ and their achievements are acknowledge with profound admiration, for their exploits and heroism in the finest traditions of the United States Naval aviation. Of these OAE’s, many of whom I never met, yet I have communicated with them over the past three years would consider them all, without exception, life time friends. I am indeed privileged to have known such a gathering of a bunch of talented and brave aviators who changed Antarctic aviation forever. This is the story of their achievements flying with planes never manufactured to operate in such harsh climates, and recording their enormous contributions made writing this book possible. Their stories are spattered with humour, for humour was part of what life was on the ice. Their wit, using their tongue savagely at times or charmingly or seductively, was all part of life on the ice in their Jamesway huts. Laughter and seriousness, all happening at the same time, was one way of surviving the isolation and absent families. Beneath the banter there was a pride in what their mates had achieved, and in taking great pleasure in recounting these episodes at length over a long cool beer. Some paid the ultimate price to advance the cause of science and Antarctic exploration, others have passed away to walk with the angels and catch up with old mates. Men like Eddie Frankiewicz, whose assistance in the writing of this book was immeasurable, although, I never meet Eddie, who passed away on May 9 2003, he still sent me original copies of valued personal, precious material, press cuttings and photos. ‘Just copy what you want and post it back in your own time’, he said. That was this man’s enormous trust in me. Eddie generosity embodies hundreds of other OAE’s, all of whom I treat as personal friends with a colourful treasure trove of Antarctic aviation knowledge, who without hesitation searched their minds and memories for me, exchanging e-mails on a regular basis. To all these proud American men and women who have served their country in Antarctic, I have dedicated this book This is a story of Courage-Sacrifice–Devotion, which just happens to be the Squadron’s Motto. To them Christchurch, New Zealand was their second home for 44 years, and the camaraderie and overwhelming hospitality they received from the folk of Christchurch was two way, and the day the squadron said farewell to the city in February 1999 after their decommissioning, was indeed a sad day, but memories of their occupation will last in the hearts of New Zealanders for many years. It would be impossible to acknowledge all those who have assisted in the writing of this book, as at times I felt inadequate to undertake such a project. I have taken every possible care to check and recheck all information. This is their story, told by the OAE’s themselves, although contributions have come from many sources, every endeavour has been made, recognizing the fact that some stories related could vary a little or be coloured from the actual truth due to the intervening 50 years, but stories which still illustrate their comradeship in what must have been the most taxing and remote peacetime military operation in history. I am grateful to the United States Navy, the US Naval News and all private collections for permission to publish all the photos herein as well as other material. To acknowledge everyone who contributed would be a volume in itself. |

1/25/2006 3:00:21 AM Dera Webmaster, Enjoyed the site and pics. Very interesting side of the US Navy. Also the lines of these vessels are nice to see, compared to all the modern stuff. I did build the USS Burton Island in scale. During the building process I got more and more interested in their actual service. Highest regards, D. Derks The Netherlands. |

12/18/2005 7:50:16 PM Greetings: I was an Ordinary Seaman helmsman,12-4 Watch, aboard the USNS Mizar, T-AGOR 11, on the 1971 or 1972, Voyage 50, Arctic expedition with USCG cutters Edisto and Northwind. Our Mizar was frozen in 6.5 feet of ice for 13 days. One of the cutters threw a screw. I was on the frozen helm when the tow cable parted, cutting throught the Mizar's forecastle skin and part of a frame (aboard the Mizar, it had not been rigged with the safety details as per the Navy ice operations manual) and aboard the cutter, the cable cut one of the helicopter landing pad supports on the cutter's stern. I do not remember which cutter had the Mizar in tow? The Mizar was recently removed from the James River reserve fleet and scrapped Cheasapeak, Va.; R.I.P. Aboard the Mizar,it was said that in WWII,the Edisto was in Soviet service and still had brass Russian instructions in the engine room? I've just retired as an FAA/FCC licensed airline mechanic. Deborah and I welcome hearing from any Edistonians on that Arctic trip: James 'Jim' A. Miller, Jr., 4978 N Hampton Dr., Southport, N.C. 28461; phone 910-457-1888.
